Starting on Big Wood Lake, we paddle south to where the Moose River enters. We then head upstream going under the Canadian-American Railroad bridge. After a short paddle we will pass Attean Landing on our left and enter Attean Lake itself. Once on Attean Lake, we paddle to the western end, passing nice sandy beaches along the way. At one of the beaches is the trailhead of the Sally Mountain trail. It's a nice day hike to the top with great views of the area.
At the western end of the lake is where the portage starts. It's 1-1/4 miles to Holeb Pond.
Once on Holeb Pond, we paddle to the outlet at the western end. There, we enter Holeb Stream which will take us to the Moose River. The Moose River twists and turns and eventually takes us back to the southern end of Attean.
Once back on Attean, it's a short paddle back to the landing where we started. Depending on our schedule, there's a lot to explore on Attean itself.
While on the river, there are 5 sets of "rips" which can be run, lined, or portaged depending on water level. About mid-way on the river, we come to Holeb Falls. There is a short portage here, but this is one of our camp sites. This is a great place to rest, fish, swim, and sightsee.
