The Jackman-Moose River Region is a great place to enjoy Maine's inland waters. Adventures range from easy paddles to a secluded beach for lunch to multi-day wilderness trips complete with portages.
For those who don't have the time (or desire) to do the Bow Trip, there are many easy trips that can be done in one or two days.
For those who aren't up to paddling we have a 17.5 foot stern drive power boat that we will use.
Starting at Spencer Rips, we can go one of two ways-up river or down river.
Going up river, we paddle to Holeb Falls and spend the night. Holeb Falls is where one of the portages on the Bow Trip is. It is an incredibly scenic area and has some good fishing spots as well. The following morning, we have a leisurely paddle back to Spencer Rips where we left the vehicles. This trip is the perfect introduction to canoe camping.
Going down river, we follow the river to Attean Landing (where your vehicle will be). The first day, we paddle down to Attean Rips where we spend the night. The next morning, we leave Attean Rips and paddle across Attean Lake to Attean Landing and take out there. The portion of the Moose River from Spencer Rips to Attean Rips goes through a portion of "Number Five Bog", an area that is full of wildlife. The river is mostly flat water and is excellent for beginners.
Attean Lake: There are plenty of campsites on the shores of Attean. Some require more paddling than others, but all of them are nice. There are hiking trails that leave from a couple and all have good swimming.
Again, power boat travel is an option for those who are not up to paddling.
Attean Lake Day Trips: $85/adult--$40/children 5 to 13--Under 5 free on day trips
Attean Lake and Moose River Overnights: $125/adult--$75/children 5 to 13--$40/under 5 years
